...like a little girl.

Silvia's Mother- Melissa Etheridge Not even just the song, which is pretty much designed to press my buttons and leave me a quivering wreck, her cover of it. My. God. Well, in case you haven't noticed, I love this woman. I've been listening to her stuff since I was an awkward little preteen dyke.

Last summer, for my birthday, my folks and I drove out to catch a show in her Live and Alone tour (Where dad misread it as "Live alone", which is good advice in the long run...) She was singing one cover per show, and this was the one for that night. I was literally standing in the audience, nails digging into my palms, weeping.

Silvia's happy, so why don't you leave her alone?

Lies-Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova-- Again, this one guts me or it wouldn't be here. It's so completely raw with that nice, accusatory edge. It's the contrast between the soft, broken stretches and the more intense chorus, also, that's such a rollercoaster it's hard to hold on. It's so rough it just tears my heart out.

You're moving too fast for me and I can't keep up with you.

Piece of my Heart--Janis Joplin
Oh man, this one just rocks! A song that I can just crank up loud and get lost in. Janis Joplin is another one of my idols, her voice is pure emotion and, man, what a gorgeous human being. There's really not much I can say about this one, it's not a weepy, omg that's so sad feeling, but it's too intense not to make the list.

You know you got it if it makes you feel good

Enough of Me-Melissa Etheridge-- Yes, again. I think this one make a good pair with Piece of My Heart--and if you haven't checked out M.E.'s cover of that, then go. Now.--It's one of my old favorites, again angry and intense in a way that just keeps getting better and more heartbreaking as I get older.
I held the world back for you

Your Ex Lover is Dead- Stars
Moving on from rage, how about some numb, heartbroken acceptance? The language in this one just makes me happy, it's the rhyming. I'm anyone's for a good rhyme. What gets me most about this one is that it isn't angry, that resignation, it's over and been over for a long time.

All of that time you thought I was sad I was trying to remember your name

Orbiting- the weepies Right, yes, this one is on my Theta/Koschei playlist. I know. And again, this one breaks me with the calm acceptance of the situation. The lines are drawn, and the sides have been taken. Also, it's pretty.

I willed you there to see, but you never came for me

Ghost--The Indigo Girls
Yes, this one's a little heavy, but like I said I love them wordy and the language in this is overwhelming.

I burn up in your presence and I know now how it feels to be weak and like Achilles with you always at my heels

Mission in the Rain--The Grateful Dead
Makes me homesick and deeply melancholic. We had the Dead on all the time, and some of my earliest memories are of being at concerts, and this song is just perfect. It sounds like San Francisco fog.

Everything you gather is just one more you can lose

Puff the Magic Dragon--Peter, Paul and Mary
This song is my childhood, on one of the tapes we'd listen to on the drive to see dad in LA, or over to the city--SF to Berkeley or vice versa-- and it would come on and I would have to fastforward through the end. I mean, poor poor Puff? How could anyone want to move on and not play any more? Really? Growing up is overrated when there's a dragon depending on you.

Present tense!
Linking to this version so I can keep at least a bit of my heart intact.

There, done with that for now. I'm just going to go eat jam and watch Imagine me and You.
